Countess of Waiterenui, station number 10, on 5th August 1915, to begin a succession of cattle breeding that has been unbroken to this day. The Waiterenui (Maori for big, fast-flowing water) herd was registered by WA (Willy) MacFarlane, grandfather of the present operator, in 1914 with purchases of quality females which all descended from top imported animals. Many of the foundation purchases were from the dispersal of the famous Gladbrook herd of Central Otago.
The herd has enjoyed considerable success over this period, in whatever field was pertinent at the time. For Willy, success came in the all important showring. For AJ (John) MacFarlane it was in ‘stud’ bull sales. Current success hinges around commercial demand. Dominant female families have been key to this success, and the ability of Waiterenui bulls to upgrade cows they are bred to. Currently the Eulie, Merry Maid, and Totara families dominate.
All three generations of MacFarlanes have been/are office bearers for the NZ Angus Association.
