Since 1990 we have had a policy of 100% grass feeding only for all females including yearling heifers, and for those yearling bulls that go through to be sold as rising two’s.
Our stock are tested, challenged and evaluated in a totally commercial environment – in fact we are specialist under-feeders of our cows. The registered cattle are run in conjunction with a large steer fattening system and a large flock of ewes in lamb to terminal sires. Stocking rates are at a level to achieve 100% utilisation of spring pasture.
We have a passion for measuring. Waiterenui was one of only two herds in the country that was able to provide historical birth weight records when NZ Angus converted to Breedplan in 1984. BLUP technology has been a tremendous tool to accurately compare cattle from different environments. While this has now made it easier than ever to pluck proven genetics from the vast Angus gene pool, the need for environmental suitability and cattle of good type will remain the major consideration when selecting seed stock. By combining all three, we strive to add value to our client’s business.
